At my church my youth leader introduced a new program for the youth in our church (usually 3-5 teens come to youth sunday school, plus me and my two teen siblings). This is what it is:
New Hope Youth Ministry
The R.I.G.H.T. Stuff
Youth ministry purpose statement:
New Hope Youth Ministry exists to Reach youth with the gospel, to Involve
them in the church, to help them Grow in their faith, to challenge them to
Honor God with their lives, and to Teach others about the God they serve.
Reach - Reaching youth with the gospel
Focus: Evangelism
One of the most important priorities of the youth ministry is to reach unsaved youth and give them a clear presentation of the gospel. There are many activities planned designed to encourage New Hope youth to invite unsaved youth to these activities.
a.. Youth Rallies
Youth rallies give New Hope youth an opportunity to invite unsaved friends
or classmates to our church. These rallies are designed around a particular
theme with skits, music, and evangelistic challenge.
a.. Youth Activities
Youth activities give New Hope youth the opportunity to continue reaching out to students that have been introduced to our church. Fellowship focused activities give our youth an opportunity to foster relationships in a casual atmosphere.
Involve - Involving youth in the church
Focus: Fellowship
a.. The R.I.G.H.T. Place Youth Service
After guests have been introduced to our youth ministry through evangelism, we want to involve them in our church. The entry-level worship experience for
the youth is our Wednesday evening service.
Each Wednesday night, an exciting youth service is held, designed to meet
the needs of youth in today's society. Through exciting games, songs, and messages,
Unbelievers are challenged to receive Christ. Believers are challenged to apply God's word in their every day lives, and more mature believers are given opportunities to minister to others.
Grow - Growing in their relationship with Christ
Focus: Discipleship
After receiving Christ as personal Savior and getting to feel at home in our
ministry, we want to see new believers continue to grow in their
relationship with the Lord. Discipleship is directly through small group
Sunday school classes and faithfulness to all services.
a.. Sunday School
Sunday school is the church organized evangelism, discipleship, and growth.
Sunday school is the most important part of the ministry for teaching the
word of God, caring for the youth, and winning the lost to Jesus Christ.
Sunday school is the place where youth are given the tools to help them grow
in their Christian lives and assimilate into our local church. The Calvary
discipleship program challenges youth to be accountable through the
following: personal daily devotions, a consistent prayer life, faithfulness
to their local church, and ministering to others through Christian service.
a.. Youth Conferences
Our youth ministry participates in local church-sponsored youth
conferences. These conferences provide our youth with a positive environment
to relax and participate in exciting Spirit-filled activities, while
focusing on the development of strong Christian character through
discipleship and preaching.
b.. Summer Camp
Every summer, our youth will have the opportunity to go to a Christian
camp. This camp will focus on Christian fellowship and the preaching of God's
word, along with fun activities.
Honor - Honoring God with their lives
Focus: Worship
As believers begin to learn more about the God they serve and develop their
personal relationship with Him, they also begin to develop their ability to
worship Him. As a ministry, we provide corporate opportunities for worship
each time we meet, through preaching, songs of praise, prayer, and
testimonies. New youth are taught the virtues of purity, faithfulness,
personal holiness, and the development of Godly disciplines.
Teach - Teaching others about the God they serve
Focus: Ministry
One of the most important facilitators of Christian growth is involving
believers in ministry. Our youth ministry seeks to provide opportunities for
growing Christians to reach out to others.
· Teen Visitation
On Wednesday evenings at 5:00 p.m., the youth of our church go to different
neighborhoods and distribute literature about our church, as well as give
individual presentations of the gospel.
· Youth Choir
Youth choir sings in the main service at various times throughout the year.
· Mission's trips
For young people who are growing in their Christian lives, opportunities are
provided to visit the mission field and meet active missionaries. These
trips facilitate an environment conducive to God working in hearts and
leading our youth into full-time Christian service.
New Hope Youth Ministry is an exciting and growing ministry of New Hope Baptist Church. Our ministry helps meet the spiritual, emotional, and social needs of the youth in a warm, friendly environment. We provide many opportunities for our young people to fellowship and build long-lasting
Christian friendships through activities, rallies, retreats, and youth
conferences. We also seek to create an atmosphere that challenges every
young person to become a leader for the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that
our young people are at a crucial point in life because they have the
opportunity to live their whole lives for Jesus. Because of this, we devote
a majority of our time in Bible Study with our young people, through Sunday
school, the R.I.G.H.T. Place Youth Services, and many other occasions for
teenagers to grow in the Lord Jesus Christ.
Okay so my problem is with the entire emphasis: evangelism. In the church. It says stuff about discipleship and Christians growing in God...but you can see the main emphasis is evangelism.
My mom says this is good for our church because we have baby Christians in the faith and non-believers in our youth group.
But I think my "getting fed" from Sunday School and Wednesday Night Bible Study days are over.
I thought the whole point of church was for Christians to get fed--and bring evangelism to the streets. Aren't non-Christians welcome to come and watch and hear the Gospel being preached but the service is catered to them?
I hope this all makes some sense.
