Two Mormons told me that Jesus is NOT God. The Bible tells me otherwise.
So my mom and I are in Winchester about to go to the library when I see two Mormons walking the sidewalk going door-to-door. AHHH! I wanted to talk to them so I asked Mom to pull over. I offered up a quick prayer for the encounter, asking God to help me remember some Scriptures when I needed them and that they would be saved. This was the second time I had witnessed to Mormons; but the first time to Mormon elders.
I jumped out of the van, and asked the two young men if I could ask them some questions about Mormonism. I don’t remember their names, but there was a dark-haired guy on the right and a blond-haired guy on the right.
“What do Mormons believe about salvation? Like, if I came up you with a knife in my back, and I have 30 seconds to live, what would you tell me?” I started.
They both told me they would tell me to pray. After a few more probing questions, they told me just to pray that God would comfort you in your last breaths.
I continued, “But I’ve done some really bad things and I want to be forgiven.”
The blond guy said, “Oh, you just have to accept Christ’s forgiveness on the cross. He has already forgiven you but you can acknowledge it.”
“Do Mormons believe there is a consequence for dying in your sins?”
They both shook their heads. “God will decide where you go when you die. We don’t decide that or control that.”
“Do you think that there is a hell?”
“Yes,” answered the dark-haired guy.
“Do you think if someone dies in their sins without forgiveness they would go to hell?”
They both shook their heads.
“So,” I said, “what could I do to help my chance of being accepted by God into heaven when I die.”
They told me to pray, read the Bible, follow Jesus’ teachings, and abide by the Ten Commandments.
“Let me get this straight. I MIGHT get into heaven if I follow the Bible here on earth. But there’s no sure way to get into heaven.”
They agreed. The dark-haired one said again, “We don’t know where we’ll go when we die because it’s up to God and Him alone.”
That broke my heart. I can’t imagine going through life trying to “earn” God’s favor so that if He liked me enough I might get to heaven. But that’s Mormonism for you
I moved on to Jesus Christ.
“Tell me what Mormonism teaches about Jesus Christ,” I said.
“Jesus died on the cross to save us,” the blond-haired guy replied.
“To save us from what?”
“To cleanse our sins.”
“I know, but when Jesus died, what was He saving us from?”
“Our sins.”
“Anything else?”
“No.”
“Do Mormons believe that Jesus Christ existed before He was born?”
The dark-haired guy quoted John 1:1-2. Right answer.
“Do Mormons believe that Jesus Christ was God?”
They both shook their heads. “He was the Son of God, not God,” the blond-haired guy said.
“So you don’t believe that there is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit--just God the Father and the other two are not God.”
“Right.”
“Do you remember in Genesis when God said ‘let Us make man in Our own image’?”
They both nodded.
“When God said ‘let US make man in OUR own image’, He was talking to Jesus and the Holy Spirit--the Trinity. So when He said that, did He only mean that ‘God’ referenced there only meant God the Father?”
The blond-haired young man said, “It’s like the Army...it’s made up of different persons but yet one Army.”
“Yes! God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy spirit and are 3 distinct persons yet one God.”
The blond-haired young man said, “Well, it’s referencing to the plural...like we,” he motioned to his friend, “follow the Mormon teachings.”
“Exactly! So that means that God is referencing to God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Because if it just meant God the Father, it would have said that. I’m a Christian, and I believe that you don’t worship the same Jesus I do because you don’t believe that He is God.”
The dark-haired guy looked convicted and the blond-haired guy looked, well, annoyed, and he said, “We have to go eat lunch now and we only have 15 minutes before we get back to work.”
“Okay,” I turned around to the van and quickly grabbed two millions. “Like I said, I’m a Christian and I believe we have all broken the Ten Commandments, like lying, stealing, and blaspheming God’s name. And I believe that if we die in our sins God will punish us with hell. But like you said, Jesus died on the cross paying the payment for our sins. He rose again on the third day and what you’ve gotta do to receive that forgiveness is to repent and trust in Jesus Christ. Not your Jesus, but the Jesus of the Bible that says He is God. Because if you don’t have the right Jesus, you’re not going to Heaven. So read a KVJ Bible and know the Jesus of the Bible.” I looked down at the Mormon bible in the blond-haired guy’s hands. “Because that bible is wrong and does not teach about the true Jesus.”
The dark-haired guy asked, “Do you believe that George Bush is a good man?”
“No, because he has probably lied and stolen just like everyone else.”
“So do we know the same George Bush if I think he is good and you don’t?”
“No, because George Bush will go to hell if he doesn’t repent and trust in Jesus Christ.”
The young man nodded, not in agreement, but understanding what I said.
“It’s like if I said, ‘I know John. John is six-foot-three with dark hair and brown eyes.’ But if you said, ‘I know John, too. John is five-foot-eight with blond hair and blue eyes,’ we’re obviously not talking about the same John.”
He nodded again thoughtfully
I shook hands with them, and they were off.
Please pray for them that they would come to know the TRUE Jesus!!
